Animals re-presentation

James

Molly

These are images of the animals that both James and Molly want to be represented as. The idea of developing both James and Molly as human beings has been disregarded because it has been regarded as common idea people use too often. This was stated by my tutor mike, he mentioned that the animation that we will be working on over the next commencing weeks is both dark and sad. The characters we created were considered to be naive and to common and close to human form. mike mainly wanted us to experiment and create something that was new and outside of the box. I evaluated his statement and realised that it was, a lot of the time I would animate using a human form and that it was too obvious If we just used James and Molly as featured characters, so we have decided to created characters that feature some traits of James and Molly through features, colours and animals.

My original idea was something like this...

Molly developed the idea of representing the characters as animals which in all fairness, is a really good idea, personally I would have preferred to work with patterns or an unusual form because there is not that expectation of making the characters look exactly like something. My example is drawing a type of dog means you would have to make sure your dog character looks like the type of dog so that it is identifiable to your audience, if not questions are asked and the purpose of the animation is lost because the characters don't make sense to the audience. The characters are important especially in this animation because it revolves around the characters present both representing Molly, James and both their father's. My idea was going be like the images above but my partners said they did not like the concept and said it would be too child like for the animation, based on the smooth and graphical shapes which I understand, because When I was developing my characters my constant thought was Mr Men.

We have settled on the idea for our characters to be animals, James wants his dad and him self to be Orangutans mainly because his dad was described to be an strong ginger haired male, so he wanted to  represent this by using a relevantly coloured animal, where as Molly feels that she would be better of as a cat of the colour blue.

The colours are beneficial because they are what relate the characters to both characters of James and Molly being that she feels blue best represents her and James feels that both the physique of his monkey like Orangutan along with the theme of orange will work well as a symbol of his dad. This is based on the memory of James's father being both muscular and ginger haired, I think this theme will work well with the description we plan to write with the characters in the animation when describe the fatherly features both Molly's and James's Fathers.
