Another 2 Onforms

These are another set of Onforms recently done in addition to the other four previously produced, I have enjoyed because it has challenged me to think creatively through giving me a concept to develop further into something effective and usable. Because of this challenge I now approach anything I do creative, I think of it as problem I need to solve, doing Onform every week and hope to continue taking part in the future.
I have done another set of Onform over the course of these three weeks revolved around few shapes. The first shark at the top was created relation to the shape because I imagined it as though it was the ocean so I designed a shark to go along with it. The second shark was not submitted based on the colours that were used, because the theme is to only stick with black and white when designing around the shape, but as you can see I have not used the required colours so that is why I made the shark black instead, which looks non-effective to because there is not much detail. The very last shape was made in to a dogs head because when first approaching the shape I imagined animal ears featured at the top shape and though of a dog and then decided to develop the shape into a dog.

My role as part of my collaborative team
My role will be to work with my strong suits which will be animating, storyboarding and character design. we have yet to organise our work but what we have been planning it to create Facebook groups, shared drives and will meet up from time to time in the Animation studio to discuss ideas, Olivia is not a part of animation there for she will not know the code, me and James will give her access.
I have been responsible for coming up with the base of our idea, creating my own animation and the music.

Collaborative brief decision
I originally picked the Adobe brief/Inspire future creators because I thought it was both and interesting, effective in its purpose and intentions, because it clearly stated who it was for and what my requirements were for this brief.
The aim of the adobe brief was to take the existing adobe creative cloud as a base and remix and re-imagine its potential and appeal for a youth audience as a new campaign launch that was to be inspiring enough to appeal to students as the chosen target audience.
We were given the option to chose a project from either A&AD or YCN, this was done by tables, almost in the form of speed dating which was where we had to move from table to table deciding on the briefs place at each table along with other practitioners both graphic artist and illustrators, who were looking to partner up with an animator themselves. I decided on the Adobe brief because I felt it would be a brief where I could be expressive in promoting Adobe as they create packages I thoroughly enjoy using professionally and I also had many key interesting facts to apply to my final out come. Unfortunately I picked a project no one else was interested in doing resulting me in taking part in another brief where there were more students, came across the Dazed brief.
The daze brief appeals to me because it allows me to be free in what I produce as my response/final out come for this project. My is to produce four 15 minute that inspire and inform of dazed as the company but inform Dazed staff as people who are both creative, curious and interested in fashion, making sure that they feel inspired and proud to work with Dazed as a fashion media company.
I am partnered up with James as an animator like me and Olivia Northrop as an illustrator, we still yet have to decide on a structure and plan for this brief and even come up with an idea in the next commencing weeks.
Previously stated that YCN looked a lot better for me, a lot more than A&AD which is my choice but for this collaborative briefs for A&AD to be a lot more adventurous and creative than YCN's because they involve more creative work and are open when it comes to design work.

Target Audience
Our target audience for this project little children based on the style we
are using currently. Our animated style is considered to be very naïve in its
approach to the situation, which would be best suited for children.
The this style was decided by the group and Molly was made responsible for the characters because she knew this style better that anyone else in the group and regularly draws this way.
We are using the naïve style because we believe that it is subtle using its feel, colours and imagery, we believe the imagery is soft and child like that's why we decided to use it. This style makes the animation feel a lot softer in its way of telling story with out being very serious about the subject.
What we intend to so with the animation is tell the story of the family death talking about the Orangutan falling "asleep" rather than saying that he "died" because words like these are softer on children's ears and give them a clear picture of what is happening through the use of another word which they understand well at a young age because they are much more familiar with it based on their experience.
This is beneficial for future reference because it will allow be to stay on track when coming to develop the final animation based on the idea and who we are aiming the animation at and may need to be considered when creating visuals for children e.g. No blood.
Molly's character designs, these shapes appeal more to children because they are round and illustrated with minimalistic features to come across as soft to children.

Script
These are both James and Molly scripts which we followed we decided that they tell both molly's and James's stories like they were and would make that we had a clear and readable script which told their stories in detail to give use a general idea of what happened.
So far doing this has helped with the creation of the visuals because it has allowed us to image important scenes for the animation using, helps give the feel of the characters and the way they feel or act.

My idea is to have a change of backgrounds based on the moods/emotions of a scene. I want to add this effect to the background and as part of the animation because I think it will give it some emotion and feeling. I think doing so the audience will engage more with the animation and feel, emotionally connected to the characters based on the colours. Text will be another asset I will be looking at next to make sure the fonts used suit what is being said in each scene e.g. "I HATE YOU !"-(rough looking font). The inspiration for this idea came from the Granddad animation previously show at the beginning of the of this brief when we were introduced to the concept of documentaries. The Granddad animation called "Vovo", which is a documentary of a boy talking about the memories of his grandfather and how he died. This was a great inspiration because it worked on communicating a family matter of death which is what we planned to do for our animation and introduced our group to the idea of creating an animation with words to communicate feelings and thoughts.
The background colours and scenery is being used because me and my team believe that it will help with communicate the feeling of loss along with the characters and text. The colours of the back ground will be communicating emotion through colour and effect, I like this personally like this idea because I think it has the potential to be easily animated and the idea of fonts, characters and shapes work well with one another in communicating feelings or effects.
Things I need to watch out for when developing these backgrounds would be the colours like the ones above, I think too many colours will clash and make the animated content hard to see especially if the colours of the characters or the font is the same as the back ground. I would say my goal would be to stick to only one or two colours, if I go above that, I will need to make sure the colours are completely different to the font and the characters, because with out the visuals, the animation would be boring and the audience will not be able to build up sense of what is going on.
Video Inspiration, when watching this, I just concentrate on the background, font and text:
Character designs
Both my self and Molly have been working on there character designs for the dad animations. I have been developing characters for the orangutang, whilst Molly worked on designing the cat character. I developed few characters that were hand draw or photoshopped but they were regarded as either child like and soft or too detailed by my group members so James decided to let Molly designed and she started to churn out some really good design on her part where as I struggled to meet James's expected character design because my style of drawing the characters was not what he was looking for.
We met up together because we felt the design work was not working well and it was taking longer than expect and there was no progress. Molly designed a set of characters along said me and her characters we considered to be best suited for the animation. So I have decided to let her focus on the character design and I work on the landscape, background and storyboarding because I have realised me doing all the design work is greedy and that I am not able to do everything by my self as I have realised that doing a lot for the creative work leaves Molly with out work for the animation and also piles on stress for me as I also have other briefs to work on all at the same time so I need to reduce the work load by sharing the creative process with my team members. This is why I have given Molly the role of character designing and I am now focusing on background work.
I really like Molly's design work it suits the theme well, it is soft on the eye but not too soft and the shapes are nicely formed and simple for animation, it is not child like and weak. My style on the other hand was too strong for this theme, so I feel this was my reason for struggling to design something that was soft and reasonable for both James and Molly as my team mates.
We are making our characters simple to animate so that we do not have to spend a long time animating each frame.

Animals re-presentation

| Molly |
These are images of the animals that both James and Molly want to be represented as. The idea of developing both James and Molly as human beings has been disregarded because it has been regarded as common idea people use too often. This was stated by my tutor mike, he mentioned that the animation that we will be working on over the next commencing weeks is both dark and sad. The characters we created were considered to be naive and to common and close to human form. mike mainly wanted us to experiment and create something that was new and outside of the box. I evaluated his statement and realised that it was, a lot of the time I would animate using a human form and that it was too obvious If we just used James and Molly as featured characters, so we have decided to created characters that feature some traits of James and Molly through features, colours and animals.
![]() |
| My original idea was something like this... |
Molly developed the idea of representing the characters as animals which in all fairness, is a really good idea, personally I would have preferred to work with patterns or an unusual form because there is not that expectation of making the characters look exactly like something. My example is drawing a type of dog means you would have to make sure your dog character looks like the type of dog so that it is identifiable to your audience, if not questions are asked and the purpose of the animation is lost because the characters don't make sense to the audience. The characters are important especially in this animation because it revolves around the characters present both representing Molly, James and both their father's. My idea was going be like the images above but my partners said they did not like the concept and said it would be too child like for the animation, based on the smooth and graphical shapes which I understand, because When I was developing my characters my constant thought was Mr Men.
We have settled on the idea for our characters to be animals, James wants his dad and him self to be Orangutans mainly because his dad was described to be an strong ginger haired male, so he wanted to represent this by using a relevantly coloured animal, where as Molly feels that she would be better of as a cat of the colour blue.
The colours are beneficial because they are what relate the characters to both characters of James and Molly being that she feels blue best represents her and James feels that both the physique of his monkey like Orangutan along with the theme of orange will work well as a symbol of his dad. This is based on the memory of James's father being both muscular and ginger haired, I think this theme will work well with the description we plan to write with the characters in the animation when describe the fatherly features both Molly's and James's Fathers.

Character design

| Character designs of Molly and James |
These are designs I have developed for our family animation based on both James and Molly. I have focused on designing the characters basic because me and the members of my group believe that it would be a lot easier to animate and less stressful. The characters are designed to look simplistic and not too close to both James and Molly because both my team mates think its better if the audience identifies them distinctively by what they class as their main features e.g. Hair, beard, ear-rings. I like the way I have composed these characters because they look very simple and straight forward to identify as both James and Molly as my peers have stated when question of who these characters look like.

| Home pride |
My feedback for the character is that, they are designed well, but the form of the characters could be a lot simpler ,the character forms don't need to be too obvious and the colours are too bright, may need reducing.
To improve these designs I will use just one solid colour for the characters and will make sure they are identifiable and will work on drawing the forms a lot more simple. my objective will be to draw a set of characters in many different simplistic from both simple and relative to James and Molly but not looking like them visually.

Responsive (Brief selection)
We worked along side illustration students to analyse developed work briefs and identify what was good and bad about them why and what where the objectives that need to be identified if we were to work on them. Everyone was also made to identify their preferred area of practice and why so that they knew what up coming competitions they would like to enter and what future job they would go into professionally.
I have enjoyed doing this task because it has helped to understand how to highlight and identify the most important key points, objectives of a brief and target audience. I have also developed a better understanding of briefs through reading difficult briefs and making sense of non sensicle information provide through the use of key words or phrases.
Our objective now is to enter 3 competitions of our choice, particularly in our preferred work areas for what we plan to do in the future. I have looked into one graphic design and two Illustration competitions.
I have chosen three illustration briefs, I have chosen these briefs because even though I am doing animation I enjoy illustrating mostly because I enjoy developing my drawing style, but mainly for the reason being that I have many other projects going on and if I was to do animations, I feel that I would not be able to mange too well because there would be too much work to do all at once involving frame work and I feel that this work may clash with my other briefs.
Competitions I am planning to enter :

Competitions I am planning to enter :
- Infected by art volume 4 competition (Deadline: December 4th, 2015)
- International Reggae poster contest 2015 (Deadline: November 30th, 2015)
- World gallery of cartoons skopje (Deadline: March 31th, 2016)
Responsive chosen brief ideas
To day we worked on understanding what briefs we would be interested in doing for our competitions and why, what they involve and how to combat the problems to solve in each brief. I have worked have already chosen my ideas before this session and completed two briefs already for both Loop de Loop and IBA, I have changed my side for a brief I set out to do before which was the World Gallery Of Cartoons Skopje 2016 and have decided swap that with both a t-shirt company called Qwartee and the International KYM Cartoon Competition. I have changed to these because the website before was all in another language making it hard to work with so It would be better to work with both something I am interested in and very similar. I will also will be working on a another brief for poster work called International Reggae Poster Contest 2015 along side the rest of these, I chose this because these music stems from my blood and family roots so I thought it would be good to take part in and I could get some inspiration from people with more of an idea about reggae music and its culture.
Majority of these briefs Picked are illustration ones because wanted to try a few illustration briefs for this responsive project to develop my drawing skills.
For these briefs I have selected and identified the important pieces of information I will need to consider when developing my pieces for these briefs.
The reason for out lining the important information on each brief is to make sure I understand the problems I need to solve when coming to develop the final out come to each brief, so that my work reflect/communicates what the brief wants me to.
Doing this has made these project move forward very well because outing the vital details has given a base of information which I can reflect to when creating my finals for each brief.

Made you look (documentary)
To day I watched a document called made you look which was a document about artist with the art industry working professionally and what it is like for artist in to days modern society. I watched this documentary to develop and understanding of what the industry of art is all about and to gain an insight into the open possibilities presented for artist like me, outside in the open world.
This was a documentary about and design in to days modern day society and up the up and coming artist in the industry, it talked about a hand full of illustrators and where they came from before becoming the artist they are today and why, from watching this documentary it was mostly about how they started of as children developing their art skills and the path that this has taken them on, all their stories in some sense related to make journey as an artist because I remember always having a passion as a young artist at the age of 8 which is where I started tracing Beano comics which is where my love for cartoons, comics and graphic illustration came from. what made me like this document more was the illustration styles the artist had they were all different, unique, colourful and a symbol of them, I have seen many traits relating to me as a practitioner and the work I do that is why this documentary had my full attention, this movie presented many valuable messages but the main one I focused on was that art is no longer considered a hobby and its a movement and skill I have developed to turn into my own line of work and that networking is what attracts people and get your work out there and know by artist around the world.
The documentary is amazing and I feel that I am already taking ideas away from this movie because its has shared some valuable tips to do with networking and how to attract people from around the world, which I am now doing to help build my profile, I feel the documentary was well presented, I would not say there are any negatives I can give because all the information and content was valuable, presented well and inspirational, through the artist and their teachings because of them explaining how they started of and the way they worked in order to build themselves which has opened my eyes to most likely doing what they did to help build my profile and the way they said to do this is to get your art work infant of a large audience.
Highlighting main things to take are both social networking, producing more piece to share publicly and entering competitions to do so.

Collaborative Project research: YCN & D&AD
D&AD
Since 1962, D&AD is a non-profit advertising association which has been inspiring a community of both visual and creative thinkers with in the art industry by celebrating the finest work in art, design and advertising. D&AD work globally in finding talent from around all parts of the world, they award talented artist and visually creative people and recruit them.
This organisation was created by a group of art designers and directors who came together based on their abilities with a sharing interest in celebrating creative communication and raising standards with in their industry.

YCN
Since 2001 YCN has been helping creative artist build connections with clients, partners and other talented people whilst learning new things. YCN link up with clients e.g. like the Guardian newspaper, finding a creative a agency for a new campaign brief. YCN work on building new experiences for artists worldwide and potential connections, that they themselves can continue use was a point of building a body of work and many more connections later on.
http://www.ycn.org/about
I am not sure of what briefs they both companies present yet, but have gathered and idea who I may want to work with on this brief. YCN would be more a choice for me when it comes to designing and animating, because they are an open company which forwards clients to creative artists. I think this company appeals to me on the bases of them artist the chance to grow their own potentials businesses, careers and even profit from them, I my self want to own my own business with various connections whilst earning money doing something I enjoy thoroughly. I might decide to work with YCN in the future if this current brief turns out right.
I feel that there is more choice of freedom with YCN more than A&AD as a company because A&AD is more artists working for a company than building their own personal business profile.

ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY-THEME: MOON
![]() |
| MOON EYE |
I decide to enter one last brief called Illustration Friday, which is similar to Onform in that it works with submission focus around a set theme/subject which you have you have to illustrate in any shape or for as long as it links to the theme it's self. From looking at the other work in the forum I decided to come up with my own idea of creating a moon in the form of an eye with a space for the background because I pictured the presentation in my mind and though this would be a very good idea to represent, mainly because I feel it is original and effective in its presentation along with the starts and space.
I developed and eye which resembled the Moon and stars in the galaxy. reason being because I wanted to think outside the box when design something for this theme, I didn't want to use the obvious because these type of images would have been posted already. So I thought of circular objects which could be made to resemble the moon, so I decided to use the idea of and eye because I thought that it would be a clever idea to replace an actual eye with a moon and space for the background so that it almost resembled the galaxy.
I used reference material to gain an idea of what this might look like when coming to develop this piece. This helped me move on with my idea because it provided me with a clear picture of many different ways I could produce my illustrated piece for this theme, looking at these references helped to build ideas for the layout and presentation.

ONFORM FLAMINGO

| FLAMINGO |
For this shape I was working with I first decide to develop a dinosaur, which did not turn out to plan because its designing was wrong so I did not decided to imagine another animal and came up with the idea of a flaming based on its shape and colour the bend on the shape gave the idea of a long bird neck e.g. swan, Flamingo or duck.
I am happy with the result because it looks clean as an shape and has been submitted along with some other excellent pieces of art and it is clear to tell that is a flamingo from its image.
This was another shape by Onform which I decided to participate in, the shape was pink partly long up front and thick at the back, this resembled a birds body so I decided to create a flamingo based on the shape it self. reason for this decision was because the shape was pink and imagined the shape to be in the form of a flamingo bird in a still, straight stance.

When I was creating this illustration I referenced a lot of images relating to flamingos to make sure that my use of colours and my creation around the shape was right. This helped me progress because it provided me with images focused on the correct colour theme and presentation which related to a flamingo, which would later on allow me to design the flamingo correctly.

unfortunately this shape was not submitted, I personally think that it was because the animation was a bit too static and did not move very well, I think that this could have been animated a lot better than it has, my weakness is that I don't really animate directly on to a digital screen so I am not used to animating directly onto Photoshop, I work with a lot of traditional work but struggled to see how I could have incorporated this method the shape based position and scale in relation to the image.
In future if I am to animate one of these shapes again, I will make sure that the I experiment more with different animation techniques and try out new methods before applying this to the shape it self.
