silhouette (chosen style)

I feel that the style of a silhouette is very clear and effective, detailed in its appearance works well together. Silhouettes are very simple, the style is effective in illustrating specific looks and the felling of an image e.g. the woman above is made to look beautiful in appearance and colour and linnier is used to communicate that, red for the lips and the pose is suggest that the woman wants to look appealing to a specific audience depending on the grounds of communication.

Chosen Narrator of windrush documentary

Felix Dexter

The chosen voicer for my documentary would be a black comedian called Felix Dexter who was born in St kitts 1961 July 26, West Indies he was a known actor and writer, he wrote many of his own plays and sketch shows such as; (2000) Room to Rent, (2000) soul patrol, (2003) The planman.

Pendulum, segmented, bouncing balls

These are former models designed for animating in Maya originally they were created for the purpose of animating and getting used to using the package for animating. I mainly focused on basic methods of movement for a bouncing ball, pendulum and segmented pendulum all involving either swinging or bouncing.

I was made to put in practice some of the twelve principals e.g. squashing and stretching  for the bouncing balls.

Storyboard (Empire Windrush)

My created storyboard based on the events of the Empire Windrush I on plan to select specific scene scenes and use them as moving images on slides that change from one to another.

I plan to create animated and illustrated scene of the boat journey for the beginning to End and jumps and the scene slow switches to the next of the boat sailing close up and reaching its destination. The animation will also contain a few characters as shown on the storyboard, I will not be using every scene because a few of the scenes don't look too interesting to animate and may not communicate what the documentary is about.

Trucking and Globe

Maya Truck

Maya Truck glossed and displayed

We were told to design a truck based on a toy model, we approached the steps were really hard but when I began to understand the functions it made the designing process a lot easier. I struggled a lot with designing the shapes and forming them to the right size main because of  my experience with photoshop, I kept linking the photoshop keys to the Maya package causing me to default and change some of my settings in the process. The form is not the same of the model that was asked to be created due to my lack of understanding with the package, I think personally the corners could do with rounding of to make the truck look more believable and soft in presentation.

Globe Maya Top

Globe Maya Side on
This is the second part to the maya design tutorial, I was able to chose my own object to recreate in the package so I chose to do Globe because I thought it had detailed parts to recreate e.g. stand. The shape I though be simple and a lot easier to develop in relation to its a shape and display.

Idea and related videos in style

My idea is to have a animation that communicate aspects of what my windrush is about, I will memorable scenes animate in a shaped silhouette that moves along with the up coming titles e.g. like Mad Men or Kiss Kiss bang bang title sequence e.g.

The graphics of this following animated title sequence are from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are very smooth in there movement but the characters and the environment that take place will move accordingly to the theme music along with the titles. The movement is very simple and want to apply this to my animation so that is not too long to produce in each scene along with its colours and effects.

The is the title sequence for Mad Men it follows the same aspects of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in the way that they present the content in a silhouette style, but I prefer the Mad Men Title sequence more because it contains more secondary movement of objects and the characters have more motion.

Duck turn around

My process to animating this turn around was very simple, I took an approach of creating my own pivoting station using masking tape as a stand for my rubber duck and slowly turned this 360 degrees according to the direction of the ducks rubber beak and measured each accordingly.

The rubber duck form was chosen because I felt it would be simple figure to draw, it contained details that were clear to its stages of turning, I also wanted the ducks figure to characterise and cartoon to add funny aspects e.g. eye brows. I mainly concentrated in the form and shapes the duck provided, but the I feel that I have the skill to draw my figure a lot better than I have done and the detail could be a lot more clearer. I have let my self down with the drawing in some areas and could draw very well but I chose not to and decided draw everything simple.

I feel the rotation is correct and it functions the way I want it to.

Windrush Research

The Empire Windrush was a German cruise ship operating by the name of Monte Rosa, that voyaged from the caribbean to London, Tilbury during the year 1948, its main purpose was to carry migrants in search of work over to Britain. It is said if it was not for the world war that the Windrush ship its self would not have made the journey, during the the world war a lot of caribbean men and women had been recruited to serve in the armed forces.

Before the Windrush embarked on its further journey to Britain it took a small stop in Bermuda to collect a few passengers before continuing. June 22nd 1948 was the day that the vessel docked at Tilbury letting off 492 passengers, this event has become a very memorable moment with in British history.

Title sequences

This is the main title sequence for Samurai Champloo, it is very colourful and bright in appearance and animates like a slide show. The movements featured in the background moving similar to saul bass's title work for Psycho, both animations move in one whole motion and very slow capturing feel of the scenery through motion and colour.

The main feature I am focussing on when reviewing these titles is how they move across the page, my aim is illustrates small traits of the Windrush in my title sequence but avoid making it look like a narrative. Motion for my animation is going to look slow so that my target is able to see each scene clearly to give the audience a clear indication to what the documentary is about.

Sound animation feedback

My general feedback for my visual language sound animation was that they were not very synced with the sounds I chose. The animations were not able to follow through in between and just kept jumping back which made the animations generally unclean. This is just summarising all the animations a part from one together because they were said to be too much the same in the aspect that they repeat a lot and aren't very free flowing.

e.g. "I like how you've used the jagged lines and think its a good representation. However, I don't think that it represents the sound well. It be good to see you sync with the sound better"

The only animation that worked was the the very last animation called "Dot-5" which communicated the effect of the shapes very well in the its movement and flickering in colour all over which symbolically communicated the feel of the sound alarm number (016.aif) in fine busy dots which works well.

e.g.

  • "Dots were a really good representation"
  • "Rapid movement also worked really well"
  • "Would have been nice to see more dots though"

Stated by Emma - "Dot 5, Best one !"

My aim over all in react to the feedback would be to revisit what I have and change the drawings in relation to the drawings and make them continuous and not so jumpy, it needs to continue and run smoothly so I would focus on creating a new shape that communicates the feel of the sound and makes it obvious and would mainly focus on the sound I have chosen and why, focus on its feel and sounds with in to produce a better sound synced animation.

Saul Bass

Saul Bass was an American Graphic designer who's career has spanned over 40 years, he is mostly know for his famous title sequences for The man in the Golden Arm (1955), North by North West (1959) and psycho. The shower scene with in psycho is said to be created and owes its success to saul Bass due to his graphic design and storyboards for the film its self.

Bass develop logos for designs for Bell (1969), Kleenex (1980s) and AT&T (1986), he worked mostly on films and advertising until his major break designing a poster for 1954 film Carmen Jones. The film makers were very impressed with his work so they invited him to design the artwork for their title sequences, which was said to have turned out to be a game changing decision.

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World

Chosen book : Empire Windrush

my chosen brief is "title", the aim of this brief to select a book you know and create a title sequence to film adaption, I am advised to choose the book and the starring actors. These must include:

  • The book must not have previously been adapted for film or TV
  • The title sequence must be exactly 30 seconds in length
  • You must have permission, if required, to use any selected audio
I have chosen to create a title sequence for a historical book called "Empire Windrush" which focuses on the arrival of the Empire windrush which brought along anxious and keen workers from the caribbean who were in search of a better life and hoped they would find one working in England.

This is my chosen book because I have done previous research on it have gained an understanding of what took place create a title sequence that symbolically communicates what the historic event is about through movement and characterisation.

Brief decision

My chosen brief is "Title"  because I feel that I have plenty ideas for me chose from in books and  I feel that there are a variety of books that have not been made into title sequences before or even documented on TV which gives me a open sources for animated ideas.

I have not chosen the other briefs because I believe that the "campaign" brief is very restrictive and very narrow in approach, I feel If I chose to do this I would be very restricted with creating a very expressive and meaning full animation freely. The "Idents" brief is creative and expressive, it allows me to do what I want but involves the focus on two individual advertisements for two separate companies and involves a very strict approach to of requirements which takes away the fun of creating a enjoyable animation.

Personally I think the Title brief offers me aspects of enjoyment and free ways of expression when tackling the production of my animation with reasonable facts to consider like the plot of the book and its contents.
