(Critical Report) If I was to do this again ?

I have produced a 2D Animation about the four Seasons with in a year.

My reason for choosing this was because I thought it would be an interesting subject to communicate, I personally do not regret choosing this subject, I personally think the way I have executed the animation could have been better.

If I was to do this project again I would redo all my animated scenes again mainly because I feel the way they are drawn could be drawn a lot better. I feel that the style which I have used does not reflect my artistic skills, not how I would usually draw. The line work on the scene is very thin and small, the way they are drawn could be drawn thicker so that the scenes stand out more. The only reason why this was not done because I drew this animation traditionally and drawing each line took a while each day hours of work. The main thing I would do is make sure I add more features to help capture scenery e.g. animals and Sun plus other assets to help reveal each season a lot better, I feel that my animation could with better if I added a bit more detail to make it look more realistic. I think music would have done well with the sounds, it just feels empty on its own with just three sounds I personally feel it needs something extra to make the animation seem busier.

The visual to the animation is very good the representation of the seasons is said by my work to be looking great the feedback has been very positive about the detail, colour and research into the subject.

Preproduction has been very beneficial, I have done thorough research into the seasons and taken inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki to help me develop a visual style for my scenery and atmosphere. I picked Miyazaki because of how his animation are very friendly especially for children who are my target audience, for this animation used his style to help me capture his very friendly and child like characteristics with in my animation.

Pitch for Final Animation

My idea was to create an animation which communicated the four seasons, I started of my talking about how my animations going to be done in first person and the features were going to be very colourful, the feedback I received was very positive and supported the idea but the problem was how I was going to communicate the seasons from the first person view. I made reference to an animation golden wolf studios created, which demonstrated first person features. I decided that first person would not work instead third person would be better because you would get a clear picture of what was going and would be able to display more visual detail all in a minute.

Target Audience

When creating this animation at the beginning I felt that my target audience was open. The though of pitching this animation to a specific audience did not occur to me. Now I realise that this has more child like features and is very soft in colour. Few things I learnt from Cop 3 during writing my dissertation about aesthetic was that colours have different meanings and effects along with shapes, these can appeal to specific audiences. When I now watch my animation I realise the features are very child like and the use of colours are very soft which means my animation is geared more towards children. I have checked all my features and this would be very suitable for children to watch.

Circles represent e.g. “completeness, Gracefulness, playfulness, comforting, unity, protection, childlike.”

“Ages 0-4 characters have really big heads and eyes, short bodies, bright colors, and simple shapes.”

Crit Final

This session was just used a presentation day to review my progress to see if I was finished. I added finishing touches to my animation and changed my music to just background sounds for each season to represent what each one felt like. My tutor advised that I should look at adding a few small extra features to complete my work, the Title and a few scenes in the animation which were missing small details, I have now improved these features and its appears to work well.

Evaluation

This project went very well, the idea which I developed was very simple and easy to work with. The objective for the beginning was to create a minute animation which communicated the four different seasons with in a year, initially my idea was to have all the visuals in first perspective but I changed it because I felt that communicating in third person would make the viewing of the animation clearer to my target audience because there is more to look at in relation to the seasons to give a clearer understanding of the story. My animation is open to all audiences, I personally have stuck to my initial proposal, the only difference is that my animation is 1 minute and 30 seconds instead of a 1 minute but the visuals are correctly representing my idea.

Whilst working on this project my objective has been to work alone because I feel I had a better understanding of what I want to do and the assets in which need to be produced. Personally I believe working by myself keeps me busy but also allows me to explore my ideas a lot better without any problems or conflict. I have shown other people my work and progress, taken advice to help improve my work, it has been very beneficial for my final animation, because it has allowed me to see errors which I had been making previously but has also developed my animation further in terms of detail. At the beginning of the module I used to avoid criticism because I was afraid of receiving negatives comments and having to restart my animation because I felt that this would back track my work progress. Working with a partner involves few problems, one being that I work to a particular style and this means that working with a partner would be hard because they would have to reproduce some of my animated scenes, but it hard when they already have their own style. I felt that this would effect the final out come of my animation because it involves two contrasting styles with no similarity.

Context of practice 3 has also been very beneficial because the study of colour has allowed me to understand what visual effects the views of a piece of artwork. Especially the emotions that come from certain colours and even the shape and design for the characters, the objective for my animation on seasons was to appeal to and open audience but I later narrowed this idea down to Children because the colours are very bright and friendly for children to look at. There is nothing dark about my animation everything is very positive and I had to make sure I payed a lot of attention to my character design so that the characters looked appealing.

Shapes are what we use to define what things are and what they can be used for. Shapes as well as colour also give meaning especially to a character as stated in the creative character design book by Bryan Tillman, it says that a square represents e.g. “stability, trust, honesty, order, conformity, security, equality and masculinity”.

Tillman, B. (2011) page 68, Creative character design. Amsterdam: Taylor & Francis (Accessed: 14th October 2016).

For research I have taken a lot of inspiration from my trip to Japan, Tokyo mainly from Hayao Miyazaki because I like his soft style of animation and character design. After visiting his museum and finding out how he animated his frames I wanted to attempt this approach myself but digitally. I have been watch a few of his animations whilst animating my final animation.

Originally my animation was going to have a soundtrack, music playing through out but I felt that is did not fit with my animation because it did not communicate the feeling of what was going on and felt too over powering because of its loudness. So I decided to use standard sounds relating to each season to help communicate what was going on.

My reason for choosing to use traditionally animated features was because I felt comfortable using this animated format, I am familiar with traditional 2D work, my strengths are strongly revolved around hand drawn visuals, I don't really like drawing digitally because I personally not able do draw accurately. The feeling of drawing digitally is not very comfortable, I like my drawing to be paper based because I believe that there is more of an effort involved.

If I was to do this project again I would take time to develop a visual style for my scenery because I did not develop and visual style for my scenery and my storyboard need more plans because it did not draw the in betweens which meant I had to take my time to imagine what would happen between each scene which took a while. I need to plan my animation better because I took a while to come up with a visual style and procrastinated for a week which back tracked me at the beginning. Areas I need to improve on is my line work and style in which I animate, whilst animating I noticed that my hand drawn scenery had begun to fade in parts because the line work was not thick enough. The motion is smooth in parts but I now notice that it is very jumpy and slow in areas, I could have reduced the frames so that some scenes moved a lot smoother. The traditional method which I used to animate my animation has taken very long after reviewing what I have done, I believe to speed up the process I could have used more of After Effects rather than draw certain features e.g. clouds continuously, would have just been easy to key frame one image and move it in after effects.

After working on this final project I have released my weaknesses and areas on my animating skills which have hindered me since the beginning of the course. Creating this animation has helped me realise how to improve by having me do things which were out of my comfort zone, especially by creating a minute animation. Most time I have done when creating an animation has been 24 seconds, personally I think I have been lazy in the previous years and scared to create a longer animation just in case I do not finish it. This module has allowed me to be patent because I used to skip frames mainly to finish my animation quicker but my final out come would suffer because of this. Most of the animation I have produced apart froths final one have been very jumpy and untidy because I have not worked at the correct frame rate, doing this final project has taught me to take my time. Taking time and amending weak areas of the animation will enable you final movie to come out looking great.

Rational

The objective for the beginning was to create a minute animation which communicated the four different seasons with in a year, initially my idea was to have all the visuals in first perspective but I changed it because I felts that communicating in third person will make the viewing of the animation clearer to my target audience because there is more to look at in relation to the seasons to give a clearer understanding of the story. I have had small problems with positioning of features e.g. with in a scene which move out of place but everything else worked very well, it runs well and displays the seasons. I have kept on track and taken each day at it has come complete a significant amount of work daily.

Errors

Noticed during the second to last crit that my tree with in one of the scenes moved and did not look like it was firmly planted on the ground, seemed to more around a lot, which made my animation look untidy. I amended this problem by repositioning each tree, the task took longer that I thought it would because the trees were not in line with each other. I initially thought that everything was drawn accurately but this is something I will need to work on in the future by making sure that I take my time to trace each frame accurately.

Bio

A Graphic illustrator and Animator with a passion for art very enthusiastic when it comes to creating visuals, focus more on the design aspect of an animation and enjoy experimenting with various different colours. Very hard work when involved with a project, specialising in creating visuals which capture the eye and evoke different feelings through colours. Inspired by many different illustrators on social media, which help me develop my own visual style. Art which I specialise in is both technical and graphical, I like to see a lot of colour and thick black lines because I believe it helps an art piece stand out.

symposis

This animated piece is about the four seasons with in a year through time-lapse, it demonstrates the drastic change in the weather pattern and how the climate is effected during each season. The main focus with in this animation is a tree which is used to highlight the change of weather by its change of state. Weather effects people’s emotions based on the temperature and colour e.g. Summer and winter which both have contrasting effects, the heat and brightness of summer evokes positive feelings but winter is dark and cold which can sometimes reflect in some people’s personality during this season.
